 CATCH AND RELEASE

WWAC has always been at the forefront of catch and release but members are required to get eligible fish weighed on electric scales that are zeroed, identified (if in doubt take a picture) and if necessary measured by a member or member of another recognised club.The fish card should then be signed either for each fish or for multiples(normally LSD's).It is the responsibility of the angler to add up the card and present at the weigh in for checking and adding any other fish which are not carded. If you are fishing on your own or without scales etc your fish need to be brought back to the weigh in. If in doubt please ask me.

RESULTS OF APRIL 6th COMP

With the slightly unusual situation of back to back comps on successive weekends a slightly reduced entry of 19 adults and 1 junior fished in the now usual situation of storm force winds and forecasted rain that thankfully failed to materialise. Yet again anglers were restricted to fishing marks in the Solent with even beaches in the west being unfishable. The top 3 all fished the same mid solent mark. Congrats to Pat Newnham for coming 3rd in his first club comp.

18 weighed in 89 fish with dogs continuing to dominate probably for the last time. This consisted of 83 LSD, 3 bass, 1 conger, 1 pout and the first sizable smut of the year, for a total of152lb 4oz.

RESULTS OF MARCH 30th COMP

22 adults and 1 junior signed on and finally a brief respite in the almost constant strong winds, rain and swell allowed members to fish a variety of venues across the Island.

Gareth Williams continues his relentless form at F Vic. now having dropped only 2 points.

The fishing was dominated by doggies with the top 6 anglers all finding bonus fish to make the difference. 21 anglers weighed in a very creditable 265lb 21/2oz consisting of

129 LSD, 4 painted rays, 3 undulates, 2 congers, 2 pout and 2 early black bream. Several bass were also caught.

Another good turnout of 27 adults and 1 junior signed on for what was for some yet another challenging night as both the conditions along the back and the fishing in general which for those who are not as old as some of us is how it used to beat this time of year. Continuing to buck the trend is Gareth Williams picking up another win at his second home Fort Vic.

Overall 15 anglers returned 59 fish totalling 117lb 10oz consisting of 49 LSD, 3 congers, 2 spotted ray, 2 pout, 1 thornback, 1 blonde ray and 1 whiting.

MARK KNIGHT CLUB CHAMPION 2023

The clubs final comp of 2023 was fished in yet more wet and windy weather alongside the 22hr Comp. successfully run by Wight Angling with 12 members signing on and 8 weigh in.

Mark produced a master class of angling with a first cast new club record Blonde Ray  of 20lb 11oz and then followed it up with another of 16lb 4oz to win easily on the night and be a worthy club champion. Close behind overall were Lee Wyatt and Gareth Williams well done to both.

31 fish were caught on the night consisting of 21 LSD 4 bass 3 blonde ray 1 undulate ray 1 smoothound and 1 conger for 109lb 131/2oz.

RESULTS OF OCTOBER 14th COMP

16 anglers signed on for the penultimate comp of the year. After gale force winds on Friday conditions were starting to settle down and conditions were considered to be good by most with anglers opting for a variety of locations. 13 anglers weighed in 37 fish for 121lb which consisted of 7 bass, 6 bream, 5 pout, 6 LSD, 3 painteds, 3 bull huss, 3 congers, 3 pollack and 1 undulate ray.

being run by Wight Angling. Please support this comp if you so wish but our comp will be run as normal including the weigh in. WWAC is a MAX of 2 rods 3 hooks  the 22hrs is 1 rod 3 hooks.

 The top 15 anglers have all qualified for the members xmas comp which is FRIDAY Dec 15th 19.00.23.00 entry £10 and Dean Walls Gardening has kindly donated £50. Many thanks Dean.

14 members fished the latest comp.with anglers split between the back and the Solent. With just single catches of smoothounds and an increase in variety signifying a change in seasons at last.

32 fish were landed consisting of 18 pout , 3 smoothounds, 3 ballan wrasse, 2 bass, 1 3 bearded rockling, 1 conger, 1 LSD, 1 black bream, 1 painted ray and 1 undulate ray for 57lb 111/2 oz.

15 members signed on despite the gale force conditions that restricted the choice of marks to the Solent and the inevitable battle with weed and tide.

I suspect only Lee Wyatt enjoyed his evening romping to a convincing win catching half the total weight of fish recorded.In total only 17 fish were recorded for 125lb 31/2oz, consisting of 11 smoothounds, 3 bass and 3 congers.

15 members signed on but on what was a disappointing night for many only 6 weighing in. At this time of year smoothounds normally dominate but only 1 was caught.

The weed however was a challenge in the Solent as is often the case.

 6 weighed in 36lb 8oz consisting of 8 pout, 4 wrasse, 2 bass, 1 hound, 1 3 bearded r/ling, 1 undulate ray and 1 conger.

RESULTS OF APRIL 15th COMP

17 members signed on for the latest comp and were able to enjoy decent weather but the latest storm had left a large swell along the back which restricted the available marks yet again.

52 fish were recorded for 105lb 7oz consisting of 35 LSD, 8 pout, 3 painteds, 2 congers, 2 three bearded rockling and the first smoothhound of the year(sure not to be the last)

16 members signed on for the latest club comp. which was again restricted by the big swell left from the recent gale. On the bright side it didn't rain!

While only 29 fish were recorded a number of rays were caught .20 LSD, 4 spotted rays, 2 undulates, 1 thornback, 1 bass and 1 conger were recorded for 78lb 91/2oz.

The clubs second competition of the year was for most a  struggle as the calm cold weather and high pressure has seen catches decline since the last comp. 17 members signed on with 11 returnin

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Please be aware that the cliffs around the Island are in an unstable state with constant  erosion and weathering causing numerous falls and slips. 

With the format for club competitions being rovers it is your choice where to fish . Take care at all times.

VENUES

Anglers will no longer be allowed to fish the area known as the broken wall during club competitions to the east of Castle Point East Cowes .

The stone groyne is the boundary. Please remember to leave your fishing area clean and tidy of rubbish and excess weed before finishing.

RESULTS OF 7th JANUARY COMP

19 members signed on for the opening comp of 2023. With high winds and persistent heavy rain being the ongoing weather pattern we were lucky that during the comp the rain held off but did allow for the bright moon. This did not seem to have an adverse effect on the fishing with  17 members returning 92 fish for 196-12.5 with quality and quantity.

The catch consisted of 75 LSD, 7 Thornbacks, 3 Congers, 2 pout, 1 codling, 1 Spotted ray, 1 Painted Ray, 1 Undulate Ray and 1 Whiting.

 Matt Cassell recorded a new club and Island Record Thornback Ray of 15lb 1oz to continue where he left off last year. Other notable fish were an Undulate of 14lb 12oz and a Painted of 9lb 2oz both by Steve Probert and a 4lb 4.5oz Spotted Ray by Rod Whitewood.

The Final shore competition of the year was fished on Saturday November 12th. Unseasonably mild weather and a bright moon resulted in a variety of species from a variety of locations with the back experiencing a large swell.

13 members signed on for the latest shore comp which was fished on a calm, dry moonlight night, with 7 weighing in 22 fish for 61lb 12oz consisting of 10 pout, 4 bass, 2 black bream, 1 LSD, 1 bull huss, 1 undulate ray and 1 3 bearded rockling. Most anglers opted to fish the back of the Island.

21 anglers signed on and we were lucky enough to fish between the record winds of Friday and the mere gale that came in at the end of the comp on Sunday morning.This still presented its challenges and for a few that was a busy night on the fish.

 The stand out fish of the night was  not among the podium finishes but a cod is as rare as a win on the lottery these days! Rod Hodgeson caught a cod of 4lb 5oz in the heaving seas at the back of the Island. Michael Wyatt continues his fine form since winning our Winter Open.

With the possibility of Government Restrictions continuing in 2021 further dates are hoped to be added to the list of Open Competitions for a Cod Comp and Medina Open.

The club has been very fortunate to have had Andy Cassels efficiently running the Shore Competitions for a number of years. Andy has decided not to continue and should there be a member willing to step in please let me know.

This additional Comp was added to the calendar as a result of the loss of a number of comps during lockdown. It produced a bumper weigh in with 20 anglers signing on and 13 weighing in 56 fish for 282lb 2oz. consisting of 35 smoothounds, 8 bream, 7 pout, 2 sole, 1 bass ,1 3 bearded rockling, 1 bull huss and 1 painted ray. All the top weights were bags of smoothounds.
