 REPORTS OF ILLEGAL NETTING

A number of recent incidents of what is most likely illegal netting have been reported at several locations around the Island.

One such recent incident in the Thorness areas has resulted in the unnecessary death of numerous Stingray and no doubt smoothounds. Dead specimens were earlier found at nearby Burntwood. Neither are of economic value but will affect stock levels for years to come.

Castlehaven has also been targeted by a separate group. Neither group could be classed as locals and it is not unreasonable to assume posts and videos on various social media platforms naming and showing catches at recognisable locations could be a factor and also aid legal commercial activity.

If you must use social media to publicise you and your catches please be discreet and if you see suspicious netting activity gather evidence and report to the appropriate authorities.

It would be beneficial if we can get a stop put to some of this damaging activity and get a high-profile prosecution to try and protect our current and future sport. We put far more into the local economy than these illegal netters.
